Gespenster is a print magazine in the tradition of small artist- and author-driven initiatives. It contains fiction, essayistic and visual contributions and is published twice a year. The editorial team has a background in literature, visual arts and performing arts, and consists of Liv Kristin Holmberg, Thomas Kvam, Beate Petersen, Stian Kristensen and Paal Bjelke Andersen. As of issue 6, visual artist and author Ane Sivertsen Langfald also joins the editorial team.

Issue 1, which was a self-funded pilot, was launched in June 2023. As of 2024, Gespenster received foundings from the Norwegian Arts Council and has been published twice a year. Issue 5 will be out in October this year.

During the pandemic, the members of the sonn to be editorial board met regularly on Zoom from their respective locations in Lindau, Berlin and Oslo. The journal came out of these conversations.

The pandemic accentuated the editors' already strong experience of crisis, and the years that followed, with the climate change, the war in Ukraine, the genocide in Gaza, and the rise of the far right, have only intensified it. We want Gespenster to be read as a response to the crises, with two important reservations: Art reacts slowly and rarely directly. More than being a commentary on the present, Gespenster is an investigation of how art and literature themselves respond to the time in which they are created.
