Super Special Normal (2023)

ISBN–978-1-3999-5791-5

The limited- edition artist's book Super Special Normal combines embroidery and episodic storytelling of loss and love for a brother who defied yet never escaped the ableist gaze. Memory is a recurring theme for interdisciplinary artist and writer Anette Lundebye. Super Special Normal delves deep into the concept of siblingship as one of the most significant and extended relationships we have in our lives. Following the passing of her brother Alexander, stitching evocative objects on his shirt fabrics became a slow ritual of processing grief and recalling memories of him, which in turn, inspired a series of 22 episodic texts and a collection of 19 embroideries that connect to tell and celebrate a whole life. Through sharing personal narratives, this book addresses universal subjects of siblingship, identity, disability, masculinity and belonging. It takes an intimate and challenging look at ableism in contemporary society.
